What is Project Niu?

Watch Niu MovieProject Niu is a K-12 science curriculum that provides students and teachers with hands-on, project-based experiences with the technologies used in remotely monitoring the ocean. Through deploying and tracking a high tech "message in a bottle" as it drifts out to sea, students develop an understanding of mankind's impact on the watershed while forming personal connections to the environment. The Project Niu team includes engineers and scientists at Archinoetics, LLC and is sponsored by NOAA's B-WET Hawaii Program.

Just What is Project Niu All About?

A lot of people have asked me about Project Niu, and just what is it? Is it an excuse to go the beach? To play with really cool toys? To make kids do science homework?

Well, the answer is longer than you might think. But it is also a really incredible, and extremely interesting project.

Welcome Kawananakoa Middle School Classes!

Today the Project Niu team visited Kawananakoa Middle School to introduce the project to two new sixth grade science classes. To all you students who were there today, we were REALLY impressed with your questions and answers today! This is going to be a great year!

Welcome Back, KMS Niu Alumni!

Last week, we went to Kawananakoa Middle School to meet with the two teachers who will be working on Project Niu this year. We were thrilled to see that about half of last year's students were there to find out how they can stay involved in Project Niu as volunteers. The students will be working on lots of extracurricular projects of their own choosing. We can't wait to see what they come up with!

Welcome, Academy of the Pacific!

On November 3, some of the Project Niu team visited the Academy of the Pacific (AOP) to introduce Project Niu. Two high school marine sciences classes at AOP will be participating this year with their teacher, Mrs. Mary Costello. Students from AOP will be contributing to this website soon and we all look forward to seeing their contributions. Welcome, Academy of the Pacific!
