Students Stories
The primary goal of Project Niu is to help students understand the important role that they can play in protecting the environment, and specifically the watershed. On this page, the students contribute their stories, writing assignments, reflections, hypotheses, etc. as they relate to their experiences in Project Niu.

Assignment One

1.) What did you learn in Project Niu?

So far, I have learned tons of things like about the Pali Lookout, the watersheds (Ancient Hawaiians), about the Niu, wind currents, ocean currents, litter, etc... I know we are going to learn a lot more.

2.) Why is it important to protect our environment?

It s important to protect out enviornment because when we pass it down to our later generations, we want them to live in a healthy, clean, and safe environment. Also, because this isour world, our home, and so we have to keep it clean. One person can make a big difference. Another thing is that there are animals in the world, and so if we litter and/or make it dirty, it will effect the animals dramatically, and they might become extinct, which we do not want to happen.

3.) What can I do to protect our environment?

There are lots of ways of how you/I can protect the environment. One is to use the 3 R's- reduce, re- use, recycle. Recycle all bottles, cans, newspapers, glass, papers, etc... Donate you unwanted clothing you have, instead of throwing it away. Our world is becoming a huge wasteland and it just keeps on growing and growing. Use different techniques to recycle, like for example, to use fluorscent light bulbs, instead of the LED light bulbs, because it uses less energy then the LED ones. Another way is to not litter, and to do some charity work like to pick up trash on the beach, and anywhere else, even in your neighborhood. The most important ways of how you can protect the environment is to influence others and teach them how you can protect the environment, because once the words spreads, the whole world will become a better and safer place to live in.

To prrtect the enviorment, I can do many things.  Such as recycle. Even though it is so much hard work, it helps the enviorment.  I can also "go green", by using a reusable shopping bag when we go to the supermarket, I can also roll down my windows when in the car instead of using the A/C.  I can do many things to protect the enviorment, but it all starts with me!

It is important to protect the enviorment, because it is most likely to be have a chain effect.  For example, when you throw a piece of trash on the ground, that piece of trash may get washed up into the storm drain, then into the ocean, then to a foreign country, and so on...  It is also important because a lot of our trash ends up killing marine life too.

I learned many things from Project Niu.  I learned that taking care of our enviorment is very important, for our generation and the generation after us.  What we are doing now could affect our future severly!!!Cry  I also learned that with Niu we will figure out  where our trash goes, which is the whole reason for this project.

I know that michi(michelle Katahira) already posted our group's hypothesis, but my hypothesis is that, since we are releasing NIU in May, which is the begining of hurricane season.  I think that if we release it during this time, a hurricane may wash it or take it away across many oceans and seas and might even end up in the Asia area, etc.... which is good for this project, because we are trying to figure out where all the trash we leave behind goes.

P.S.- I cant wait to release NIU on May 8th!!!! :]

Hey everyoneLaughing! Before we launch Project Niu on May 8,2008,we 6th grade students wrote our own hypothesis on where we think it would go. This is our hypothesis {Group 5}Foot in mouth, hope you can learn something out of it.

Our hypothesis for Project Niu is that since there is very high winds on the Big island the wind might change the current {the probe might come back here to Hawaii}Cry. There is often heavy rains on Kauai which causes huge and high waves {surf}. so the probe could get caught in a  huge wave and get swept out to California or Washington. Maybe.

Well we don't really know what is going to happen { i guess this is why they call it a hypothesisEmbarassed} but now that it is hurricane season it can go anywhere. Our last hypothesis is maybe it will get damaged by a shark or a whale. OH NOSurprised!

Well that concludes our hypothesis. Mahalo for taking sometime to read our hypothesis! Hope you can join us on May 8, 2008 when we release it!

Wehope that the niu will travel all around the world.Smile  This would go all according to plan if nothing interruptsit.  The niu might drift thousandsof miles away from Hawaii.  If itdrifts to land, it will be found with other trash.  We also hope that people will read the warning, and put theniu back into the ocean.

When the niu istraveling, it might drift back to Hawaii. Or the hot sun might crack it, and water could get in the niu.Cry  The outside is waterproof, but theinside isn't.  It might also getcaught in a hurricane, and get damaged, because we are releasing it duringhurricane season.  The niu may alsoget caught in a fishing net, and someone might keep it.Surprised  People might take the niu because theycan't read, or they don't notice the warning.  The water might also wear off the words, and people won't beable to see it.  It would also befunny if an animal ate it.  But itmost likely wouldn't happen, because they are sensitive about what they eat.    Although there are many obstacles in it's path, the niu could travel all around the world.  We all sure hope that it does.Laughing

We are launching the Project Niu device in May, which is during hurricane season. It may end up somewhere by Japan and the Philippines, because that is the direction the currents go. It may also come back to Hawaii due to the incoming waves, or it may get caught in a hurricane

Dear Hypothesis Readers,

Whatever my group number is, there are 4 students in our group- Mari Onoye, Natalie Owen[thats me!!], Jake Sabel, and Ryan Dias. Our hypothesis about where the Niu will end up is that we think it will end up in Japan, because the general currents lead to japan. Also, the place we launch Niu is a factor in Japan. A few reasons why Niu may not go to Japan is because a shark or a whale could swallow it. OR a hurricane might destroy Niu with its rapid waves and we'll be launching Niu in HURRICANE season[*GASP*]. Many possibilities happen through the ocean....SOOOO...yeah...

p.s. GO PROJECTNIU-ERS<33 <---i support 'cause im one of the projectniu-ers XD

p.s.s. MARI AND I CANT WAIT TIL WE LAUNCH NIU!!!!! ^-^y peace.

We think the sensor is going to float far and after a while probobly get put in another current Smile.  Or after a while a shark or another marine life animal could eat it

Another possibility is that if it is raining the waters will be higher and it will be windy so that could cause the sensor to float back Frown.  If there is a crack in the buie than water will seap in and the sensor may sink and the equipment would be destroyed.

If the sensor is caught in a hurricane then it might break because the sensor is not made for such high winds.  If it is caught in a hurricane at the hurricane settles the sensor could of probablly made it to land.

It is also possible that niu is not eaten because it does not resemble any marine life animal.  Niu could also be picked up and be carried around Embarassed.
