Welcome to Project Niu

Project Niu is an educational curriculum created by Archinoetics, LLC and sponsored by NOAA's B-WET Hawaii program. It provides students of all ages with hands-on experience with the technological capabilities of environmental monitoring, sensing, and modeling techniques for the purpose of improving their understanding of human impact on Hawaii’s watershed.

The project includes a small floating sensor device, called the “Niu” (Hawaiian for "coconut"), that will be deployed somewhere in Oahu’s watershed and then tracked via GPS and a satellite modem as it drifts with the ocean’s currents. Niu will provide daily updates of its location and sensory information about its surroundings on this website, which will also contain lesson plans and student contributions. Lessons include scientific fields such as oceanography, meteorology, and marine biology as well as the historical, cultural, and economic importance of the watershed.
