Video: Project Niu Overview
The Niu, at Sea
On January 30, 2009, one of the Niu sensors stopped sending data soon after being deployed. The Project Niu team, seeing that the other two Niu’s were close together and only a few miles from shore, guessed that Niu Poni would be close by. So, we chartered a boat and headed out to sea with our laptops and GPS coordinates as a destination. We were able to find all three Niu’s without much trouble at all. We removed the foam from all of them after witnessing that it hindered them from flipping back to normal in the waves. Niu Poni was working fine but had been jarred when dropped into the ocean and gone into its safety mode that would only transmit once every twelve hours. All was well, so we returned victorious!
Niu Launch at Kawaikui Beach Park
On January 30, 2009, Project Niu launched three Niu ocean drifters into the ocean off of the east side of Oahu. Over 150 students from three schools and seven classes were in attendance. Students learned about the watershed in the area, cleaned the beach from rubbish and marine debris, and formed hypotheses as to where the Niu’s would go.
