Tracking Niu
Project niu
Submitted by IP on Wed, 12/17/2008 - 5:00pmProject niu. i hope ur invention works. I really do hpe so. ^-^ (that face is acually a happy face.) and if one of my friends or any one else is reading this tracking niu is just so easy! all you have to do is put a tracker in a really REALLY hard water proof shell. this is because wat if a whale thinks its food? then well that would be VERY VERY bad o-o" so i just hope that doesnt happen. but you know i really dont think that would happen BUT there is a little bit of a possiblelity that could happen.

On this field trip, my group and I learned a lot of new things. We learned about the Niu device, oceanography, re- useable resources, non-reusable resources, and most importantly, how to protect the environment.
The Niu device’s shell is made of carbonate, a very hard plastic. We can track the Niu device by a sensor placed on it that connects to a satellite. This device will last around a year at sea.
In oceanography, we learned about water currents and ocean circulation.
Sea Caves
Submitted by benbryant on Wed, 12/03/2008 - 8:41pmwhat are the odds of the niu going into a sea cave? if it did go into a cave, would we be able to detect it?
What's the purpose of Niu?
Submitted by kari on Fri, 11/21/2008 - 4:11pmjosiah, u came to KES not too long ago, and my question was what is pretty much the purpose of the niu? is it to see marine life? or see where all the rubbish is? and was the niu expensive?(all materials)

Submitted by Codizzle on Thu, 11/20/2008 - 9:29pmHey Josiah. >:) Today you and your "partners" came to our school and were talking about the Niu (of course) and my friend and i were discussing about what would happen if a wave continuously thrashed the little coconut :'( into a LARGE rock. i mean would it break or just like, keep going 0_o. K thanks :{D
P.S. sorry for spelling errors (if there are any) >:{(

Four new Niu ocean drifters will be launched from Hawaii in January 2009!
The first Niu was launched on May 8, 2008 from Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu and traveled over 1,471 miles in approximately four months. The last transmission from Niu was from about 400 miles east of Midway Islands.

Since this is my first entry, let me introduce myself . . . My name is Niu. I’m the second of my kind! I have a big brother, also a Niu. We’re both from Project Niu, and in case you didn’t know, “niu” in Hawaiian means “coconut”.
Lesson 3 - Ocean Currents
Grade: 6
Goals
- Learning the factors that create ocean currents (temperature, salinity, wind)
- Discussion of ocean circulation and its effects on weather
Objectives
1. Recreate surface currents using “wind” in a classroom demonstration
2. Simulate effects of landmasses and submarine features on currents
3. Model the complexity of fluid/current flow
4. Model the effects of temperature on water density/current formation
