Niu's First Photo
Submitted by Niu on Tue, 11/25/2008 - 6:58pmEverything is coming together Journal! So much has been going on!
I’ve been going out of the office more to run more battery and solar panel tests – but this time, I’ve been out for an entire WEEK instead of just the weekend! It’s not that I don’t like spending time with the people at Archinoetics, but I need to be out and FREE! That’s why I can’t wait until I’m out surfing the ocean!
Just What is Project Niu All About?
A lot of people have asked me about Project Niu, and just what is it? Is it an excuse to go the beach? To play with really cool toys? To make kids do science homework?
Well, the answer is longer than you might think. But it is also a really incredible, and extremely interesting project.

Great news! A bunch of stuff happened since I last talked to you.
The coolest part was that I actually got a chance to leave the office over the weekend. The people at Archinoetics wanted to do some tests on my solar panels and batteries. They wanted to see how the solar panels read and if the battery was charging. (I don’t know about you, but I was looking more forward to the sunbathing than the testing.) The only down side to the weekend was that it rained practically the whole time! Good thing I had something to cover up with or I would have been in big trouble.

Since this is my first entry, let me introduce myself . . . My name is Niu. I’m the second of my kind! I have a big brother, also a Niu. We’re both from Project Niu, and in case you didn’t know, “niu” in Hawaiian means “coconut”.

This is my first blog on the new Project Niu website, which now allows everyone to write their own personal blog here. I'm very excited about the 2008-2009 school year for Project Niu... there are a lot of new things coming! Not only do we have an exciting new version of Niu with new features (more on that soon), but we also have a new website and lots more students involved. In fact, we will have about 150-200 students taking part in Project Niu this year! Awesome.

Why Niu?
The name "Niu" has a dual-meaning for this project:
- Niu is the Hawaiian word for “coconut”
- Niu stands for "Nature Imparts Understanding"
The Niu device will be a small, autonomous, floating, ocean-going sensor that will be launched from somewhere in the watershed of Oahu and drift throughout the Hawaiian Islands and the Pacific Ocean.
